Tips to Recover After a Bariatric Surgery

Health

Bariatric surgery is also known as weight loss surgery. It is done on people who are suffering from obesity and have BMI (Basal Metabolic Index) between 35 and 40. In this surgery a portion of the stomach is cut or in other words the size of the stomach reduced. It is also can be done by gastric bypass surgery which includes the re-routing of the small intestine in a small stomach pouch. After the surgical procedure is done one must follow some post-surgical rules to recover fast which includes time to time medication, proper diet and rest.

Post-bariatric surgery the patient is discharged from the hospital after 3 to 5 days of surgery. He/she can go to work after 3 weeks of the surgery but he/she must follow a proper diet along with many other things to recover.

Post-Surgery Diet:

One should not go back directly to their normal life just after the surgery as the size of the stomach has been reduced. There should be a slow transition from liquid to solid food. The speed of transition totally depends on the process of surgery and the best bariatric surgeon in India will surely give a diet chart. One must consume a good amount of fluid. But that should not be just water but other low-calorie fluid like caffeine free tea.

Incision Cleaning Instruction:

The incision should be cleaned properly with soap and water and then air dry it or pat dry with a clean towel. Mild swelling and leaking blood is normal but if there is an excessive leakage of fluid, redness of the skin and the leaking fluid has a changed color then one must consult the surgeon. Apply moisturizer on the scars to reduce scarring and also sunscreen if the area is exposed to the sun.

Activity after Surgery:

After surgery, one should not take up any heavy work or try to lift heavy things. Start by simple movements and breathing exercises. You also can go for some walking at morning or evening. You can also start driving and taking showers but no hot tub or Jacuzzi. After 4 to 6 weeks you can go back to normal daily activities along with heavy exercises and weight lifting but after consulting the surgeon.

Post-Surgical Pain:

One would experience pain after any surgery and the pain experienced after bariatric surgery is nothing else. In the hospital, the pain of the patient is controlled by IV pain medication. After 1 to 2 weeks, the pain should subside and be managed with medicines. After 3 weeks the pain should be mostly gone but if persists continue the medicines accordingly.

Other Health Problems:

After the surgery, the patient may feel unpleasant or may have a mild pain but they will go eventually with some time. The most common is nausea or vomiting. Some other problems are body ache, tired feeling, constipation, diarrhea, hair loss etc. It generally takes 2 to 6 weeks and the patient will be back to his or her normal life.

Conclusion:

This is a scenario of a post-surgical situation which you may or may not experience. Do maintain the healthy lifestyle thoroughly.
